Katarina Witt first began to skate as early as age 5 years. Her success allowed her to show her talent and gain entry into the Karl-Marx-Stadt special school specifically designed for gifted children. The coach Jutta was also at the school. Witt made her mark in the second position she placed at the 1982 World Championships, held in Copenhagen. Her grace and elegance captured the attention of everyone at that time, and from then forward she began to dominate the sport. Olympic triumph at the Sarajevo Winter Games of 1984, Katarina Witz won the ladies' gold medal for figure skating in an intense contest. Her victory four years ago was a bit more tense. She was not a winner in the free skating contest but she did win gold on the basis of performances during the compulsory figure and short program. Witt was the first woman since Sonja Haenie who was a repeat figure skating winner. Hall of Fame Witt competed at Lillehammer Winter Games in 1994 following her successful run acting. While she was not able to win a medal, Witt enchanted her audience despite placing seventh. Witt was elected to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1995.
